Lava Destroys Homes in Hawaii
After nearly three decades, the Kilauea volcano finally claimed the last home in the ravaged Royal Gardens subdivision on Hawaii’s big island.
Homeowner Jack Thompson hoped this latest threat would miss his home, like so many had in the past. He was evacuated by helicopter Friday night as the lava inched closer and closer to his house. “It [the lava] was pretty much coming in the back as we were going out the front,” Thompson told the Hawaii Tribune Herald.

The Caucus: Holder Outlines Policy on Killing Terrorism Suspects (March 5, 2012)
“Given the nature of how terrorists act and where they tend to hide, it may not always be feasible to capture a United States citizen terrorist who presents an imminent threat of violent attack,” Mr. Holder said in a speech at Northwestern University’s law school. “In that case, our government has the clear authority to defend the United States with lethal force.”
Man killed daughter, 5, because she had accident
Matthew Carr, 22, of the 3400 block of Callaway Ave. in northwest Baltimore, was charged Tuesday night with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in the death of Mya Carr, records show. A lesser murder charge, assault charges and reckless endangerment have also been filed against him.
Baltimore police received a call around 10:30 p.m. Monday from Matthew Carr, who said he found his daughter unresponsive in a bathtub. Medics found the child's body on the floor of bathroom and said there were signs of trauma to her arms and legs, and to other areas of the body, records show.
Homicide detectives noted that the bathroom appeared to have been recently cleaned and there was a strong odor of bleach. Children's clothes also appeared to have been washed in the sink, according to charging documents.
"Evidence strongly indicated Mr. Carr attempted to clean the crime scene," Detective Aaron Cruz wrote in court papers.
Carr, who police said appeared to have been drinking, was taken to the homicide unit. He later told detectives that he beat his daughter repeatedly with his hands because he was angry that she had an accident, Cruz wrote.
Court records show Carr was ordered held without bond by a Baltimore City District Court commissioner. A preliminary court date has been set for March 27; no defense attorney was listed in the court papers.
