Man killed daughter, 5, because she had accident

A Baltimore man has been charged with killing his 5-year-old daughter after he told police that he beat her in anger because she soiled herself, according to court records.

Matthew Carr, 22, of the 3400 block of Callaway Ave. in northwest Baltimore, was charged Tuesday night with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in the death of Mya Carr, records show. A lesser murder charge, assault charges and reckless endangerment have also been filed against him.

Baltimore police received a call around 10:30 p.m. Monday from Matthew Carr, who said he found his daughter unresponsive in a bathtub. Medics found the child's body on the floor of bathroom and said there were signs of trauma to her arms and legs, and to other areas of the body, records show.

Homicide detectives noted that the bathroom appeared to have been recently cleaned and there was a strong odor of bleach. Children's clothes also appeared to have been washed in the sink, according to charging documents.

"Evidence strongly indicated Mr. Carr attempted to clean the crime scene," Detective Aaron Cruz wrote in court papers.

Carr, who police said appeared to have been drinking, was taken to the homicide unit. He later told detectives that he beat his daughter repeatedly with his hands because he was angry that she had an accident, Cruz wrote.

Court records show Carr was ordered held without bond by a Baltimore City District Court commissioner. A preliminary court date has been set for March 27; no defense attorney was listed in the court papers.
